Late B question

Why don't you switch the plow bottoms around and make it a 2-14 plow? That would help a bit. (You did know that a 44 plow can be set to either 14" or 16" bottoms? You can tell which it is set for by looking from the rear. If the standards are curved in towards each other, it is set for a 14" width. If they curve away from each other, the plow is set for a 16" furrow. According the Owner's Manual, the 44's came from the factory set for a 16" furrow.

I did not know that Lon. I have the OM but cant find it . Its here somewhere. I do pull it the same plow with a '49 A too. Kind of wanted to leave it 16s for that but its still an option. I really wish I could find a nice 44H with the 12-14 frames for the B.

2 on the land side and 1 in the furrow. If all flat and level, might get away 2 land side and none furrow. And if you switch the STANDARDS around like mentioned, the furrow plow wheel also needs to be reversed! Rear wheels need to be set 25",s or 27",s from center of tractor to inside wall of tire, depending on desired plow WIDTH of cut. 14 or 16.

Going to depend on whether you are trying to impress anyone with being able to plow 8-10" deep. For plow days or food plots/gardens or any plowing for that matter , 6-7" is plenty. They make chizzel plows for anything deeper. It probably has the heavy cast wheel centers and weighs a little over 4000 and 28 hp shouldn't have a problem in 3rd gear with 2-16,s unless plowing dry "concrete.

I am sure you will hear others claim they can pull 3x14" in 4th gear with their stock "B", but they won't do it around Here...

Our 1952 "Late Styled" JD "B" tractors ( in typical OHIO soils ) have all they can handle with 2x14" in 2nd and (sometimes) in 3rd.

These were and are in healthy condition..with Loaded 12.4x38" rears and still at times were on their knees in 2nd gear (Yellow Wax)..

You can try it and expect a miracle, or just get a GOOD, Scoured 2x14" and be happy..

Bigbore, here by Albert City a late A is a good tractor for 2x16's. Your B will pull it in 1'st or 2'nd gear if you can get the power to the ground. Jim

Jim the ground here by Sac City is probably about the same. I have never really worked a late B much. Had a '42 model that didn't even like 2-14s in heavy ground. I do think the ground around here will plow up nice this fall, should be mellow. Thanks for info guys. Mike
