40 hydraulics

Hi, my dad just recently acquired a model 40 and when he first brought it home the 3 pt was working. Now it only seems to lift when it first starts and the level is in the raised position. After that, it doesn't work anymore. I'm not at all familiar with these and was wondering if there is a common problem or where I should start and go as I investigate.

Thanks,

First thing would be the fluid level?

Then there is the issue if it is a single or dual tom and how you are using the controls.

I think the first step would be an operators manual.

There are seven different designations for the Model 40 Series tractor: C crawler, H high crop, S standard, T tricycle, U utility, V special, W two-row utility.

The designation letter will be on the serial number plate located on the left side of the tractor.

Take a look at the photo below of the serial number plate on "BW" our 54 Model 40T.

Note that there is no T for the tricycle tractor.

Check the oil level by opening the oil level test cock.

If oil does not "drip" from the oil level test cock, then add 10w oil at the filler cap located under the seat cushion.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Check the position of the left control lever (Key 9) and right control lever (Key 13).

Moving both levers to the front lowers the lift arms; moving both levers to the rear lifts the lift arms.

Take a look at the oil level test cock on "Audie" our 54 Model 40S located on the front of the Touch-O-Matic.

If oil does not "drip" from the oil level test cock, then add 10w oil at the breather cap located under the seat cushion.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Check the position of the control lever (Key 24).

Moving the lever to the front lowers the lift arms; moving the lever to the rear lifts the lift arms.

Hope this helps.

thanks. I got a manual coming but wanted to get this going this weekend if I could. It is a Tricycle. Why the 2 levers? Also, just standard 10w engine oil?

Thanks,

Brent

Glad to hear that you have an operator's manual on the way.

Reviewed the Operator's Manual OM-T2-455 on page 27.

In the second paragraph it states:

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]"The Touch-o-matic system may be operated, in conjunction with three-point implement and load and depth control, in any one of three different ways."[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

In the third paragraph it states:

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]"The right-hand control lever operates the right-hand cylinder and the two outer lift arms. The left-hand control lever operates the left-hand cylinder and the inner left-hand arm."[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

On page 59 under the [b:654c4848f0]CHECKING TOUCH-O-MATIC OIL LEVEL[/b:654c4848f0] in the first paragraph it states:

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]"If additional oil is needed, add SAE 10 W oil at the filler opening until it runs out of oil level cock. (Oil capacity is approximately 5-1/2 U.S. quarts.)"[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]
