Flywheel spacer. Possible overdrive???

I posted last week about the flywheel on my 40 B not being all the way on the shaft. Several opinions were given ranging from worn out engine crank, slinger not correct, to paint on shaft, and then two people said that there could be an overdrive on the tractor and a spacer was required to keep from busting your knuckles when starting. Here are some pics as requested of that box. Is it an overdrive? If so, how does it work? Thanks.

Well I don't mind saying it . I told you so !!!

I thought I spied the makings of an overdrive box in those other pictures. I have seen very few of them and never saw one apart. I thought they had a lever sticking up to shift it with. Someone could of robbed some parts out ? I think that the shafts were changed to add those also.
So That spacer is likely one made to save your knuckles and you should leave it in there I guess.

Yes, you said so. Wish I knew how to operate it. There's no levers or anything. Just a pin/rod running length wise with the tractor that has just a little movement in it. I put a set of vice grips on it and it will turn about 1/8 of a turn but I can't get it to engage or anything. Anybody know anything about them?

Pat, not only is it an overdrive, its a Behlen overdrive. There were several different manufactures, Heisler is another. This one is definately a Behlen. The box adds another gear. You use the original transmission for the first four gears (1 and 2 with a high and low for each) and then you put the tractor transmission in neutral and shift the overdrive in (push the lever "out") and use high for sixth gear and low for fifth gear. The shaft only moves about an eight of an inch or so at best, so I'll bet its all there. Good luck!

Have the main tractor tranny in neutral. I think is what I have heard. Not sure about the Hi-Low ? maybe they work in both ?
Then try moving that pin/rod like you were and maybe at the same time have someone rotate the belt pulley and see if you can feel any gears racking or engaging ? Wouldn't it be kinda neat if it worked ! Could also be someone tore the guts up in it ? and pulled the pieces out.

I see yours also has the shift pattern numbers highlighted in yellow. I used to scoff at this practice because it wasn't original. But then I became aware of the benefits this has in low light and night times. I now see it as a saftey issue. Makeing it safer to get in the right gear at times like loading and unloading. Too many tractors and too many different patterns to remember too.

Thanks. I hope to try it tonight but most likely tomorrow. I am so sore from riding that thing all day raking and getting up hay that I could barely get out of bed yesterday. Tylenol and Natty Light had me feeling pretty good by late afternoon.

I'll leave that to the experts but the overdrive shouldn't effect any of the other 4 original gears. Experts?

I'm pretty sure the gears are in that box. With vice grips I can hear something going on in that thing. I probably should make sure that there is oil in it before using it for real. I guess there was oil in it????

As for the yellow on the numbers...I had my girlfriend paint all the JD symbols and the gear numbers in yellow. I know it's not original but I think it looks good. This is not a show tractor by any means. I've had it in a parade but I actually use this thing for fun. It's filthy right now from haying. Simply coated in dust right now. It's just a toy where my others are workers.

I would tend to think if the tranny was full it should get into that box from the lower shaft area.

It will not affect the other gears. In fact, if you try to engage the overdrive AND have it in gear on the main transmission, bad things will happen. Hopefully, the motor will stall out and die before the gears die.

I have the Belhen on my 1939 John Deere B. My gears work and if you send me your email I can show you the shifter. My question is how do you add fluid for the Belhen Box?
