24v Generator to 24V Alternator

Considering the replacement of my 24V Gen with a 24V Alternator on my 4010. Nothing wrong with it....just that the low generator output takes awhile to charge the batteries especially if I"m running the lights.

Found a New OE Leece Neville that matches to a TY1448 which, according to JD, is the 24v Alternator for a 4020 24v system.

If I got this alternator, what else would I need to do electrically speaking? Would I still keep the voltage regulator? And what about wiring it up?

Thanks for any insight on this.

Good thing you asked. Numerous tinkerers have been met with sparks, blown fuses , failed alternators and dead batteries.
Both the pos and neg will have to float free of any chassis connection inside the alternator.
The two cylinder 840 used a 20amp, 24V generator.
Maybe time to consider 12V neg ground with an alternator and a 4 or 5KW Denso starter.

THIS IS THE THEORY, TX JIM MAY HAVE THE ACTUAL WIRING DIAGRAM YOU NEED: The alternator needs to be a two wire 24 volt + and - device, is it???

You would NOT use the old Generators Voltage Regulator,,,,,,,,,I assume the Alternator has 24 volt + and - output terminals BOTH of which are totally isolated and insulated from the alternators case/frame right???,,,,,,,,,The two 12 volt batteries in series has obviously one + (one battery) and one - (other battery) terminal which is 24 volts,,,,,,,,,The alternators two 24 volt + and - output leads must eventually electrically connect to the batteries + and -,,,,,,,,,Depending on wiring and wire sizes one place that 24 volts is available is where the two A & B feeds were wired up to the light switch that came from (perhaps via circuit breakers) the two big battery cables to the starter and solenoid.

Best I can do as I have NO wiring diagrams.

This is one of the FEW TIMES b&d & I will agree. If your tractor isn't a restoration(trailer queen) I'd recommend changing it over to a 12 volt system. Not necessarily a Denso starter as Iskra starters are very good starters. For about $400 your 24 volt problems will be history.

Okay, thanks anyway Jim, I believe my theory and the locations of where he might wire his alternators 24 volt Pos and Neg isolated posts to are correct, but I have no idea if the alternator he mentioned is indeed ISOLATED AND INSULATED off its case/frame???

Hi
I am Not sure about the iskra starter being
good. I had one on my Valtra. It quit last
winter. I called the local starter shop who is
very reputable. gave him the number off it and
asked if he could re build. His comment was
thats an anchor for a model boat.
He then went on to explain that they are
copies of Bosch, and Bosch sue them once in a
while, so they shut down alter the design and
start making them again.
He said parts are near non existent for most
of them he sees.
He sold me a genuine Bosch for $435, including
next day air freight and taxes, Valtra wanted
$1000 for there replacement.
He said in a few years if i needed parts he
would have them on the shelf, and could re
build the Bosch with no problems.

We sell the new USA made Leece Neville/Motorola alternator (35 amp), regulator and pulley for the JD applications. The alternator is a replacement for the 500, 600, 700 Industrial models, as well as the 5010 and 5020.

We also make specific wiring harnesses for the 24 volt alternator when replacing the 24 volt generator on the two cylinders and New Generation tractors.

The alternator housing is insulated from the electrical connections, as is the original generator. There are 2 output posts: 12v + and 12V-. It does require an excitation circuit ("GEN" light). I have had one of these on my 730 since about 1979 with no problems.
