4230 Syncro Trans Lube Pump...Ouch Update

JD 4230 with Syncro Trans. I have posted in the past about Hyd's slow. Had the JD tech out and tested the pressure for the clutch port etc. Trans lube pump is putting out 118 lbs at high engine rpm. Should be more like 180 lbs. We checked the relieve valve it looks good and well as the gasket, o rings for the trans pump and tubes. Pulled the trans pump out and it has some wear in the bushing to pump housing. Hasn't tore the pump housing side walls yet but there are marks in it. The bushing is pretty wore. To re bush the pump it will be $400 at a machine shop and it with still have wear to the housing. A replacement JD pump will be $900 if I can get the parts separate. It uses the AR62938 housing and the AR61290 gears that seem to only fit the 4230 syncro, not available aftermarket and hard to find not to mention expensive. I tried the Quad range pump wont fit.

Question how much wear is to much in these trans pumps before it causes problems?

Does anyone know what tread the test ports are on the clutch valve housing for testing the pressure. I cant find a fitting that is the same thread? The John Deere tech cost me $600 for a 30 minute test.

The test plugs are 1/2" NF, seal with an "O" ring.

That is the thread/size of an SAE 5 (-05)
hydraulic fitting.

See chart below.

"Down and dirty" field option is to take a spare plug and braze a 1/8" or 1/4" pipe thread coupling to it, and drill a small hole in the plug.

I have wondered if there was an A&I pump available for them in the older standard design ?? The new Hi out put one is good but pricy..

It's the cost of doing business with 39+ year old equipment. Components wear while seals also wear , harden and become less pliable. The updated high volume pump allows the tractor to operate without a complete transmission rebuild as it oozes and dribbles internally .
Anything hydraulic connected to the tractor ? What kind of hydraulic/transmission oil ? Is the problem worse in hot weather?

It has the harder to find syncro 8 speed trans. It it had the Quad range or powershift the pump is available from John Deere and aftermarket. Aftermarket for the quad range is only $350. John Deere does not even offer my pump any more its an odd ball only fitting the 4230 Syncro from what I see.

The Hydraulics work just slower, doesn't change hot or cold. Actually in the cold its worse.
I have a hard time believing that this standard gear pump is my problem in the first place since it is in reasonable shape ok.

Tim I tried the Quard Range pump it was a different part number as well. It wont even come close to bolting up to the trans case. I was hoping it was the same. Looks like a Syncro 4230 is a bit odd.

(quoted from post at 13:27:31 09/17/14) The Quad range and the Sychro Range take the same pump...

Not according to parts catalog QR & SR have different housings

(A) QUAD-RANGE TRANSMISSION

(B) SYNCRO-RANGE TRANSMISSION

Yes I'm seeing that,, I was near sure that Deere bored the case the same on both ...90% of them are Quad range around here.

the housing and gears are less than 600 hundred at greenfarmparts.com till September 28 ..put in part numbers and in checkout put BLOWOUT....get an extra 12% off...look at parts coupon at top

Like you I would have bet they were the same but they aren't.
Checked A&I and they don't have anything either.

I was thinking if an older number could be put with the A- in front of it maybe it would turn up good...

Yes it must be, and I guess I never realized that 99% of them are Quads around here,,now I'm wondering if it's the same with a 4240??
