fuel tank fill

My 1948 JD D has two gas tank fill caps. One is located a few inches behind the other on top of the tank. Looks like the line from the tank to the carb. is on the rear small tank but there is no fuel in this tank. The tractor must be running off of the front tank. My question is, which fill area should I use the front or rear? Any answers? Thanks, Basil

Your tractor is a All-Fuel. The front is for Distalate fuel and the rear is for gasoline. Back when your tractor was new, Distalate fuel was cheap and plentiful. Therefore you started the tractor on gas, when the operating temp got to 180 degrees or more, the operator switched the 3-way valve under the tank to burn distalate. I assume you still have the 3-way valve and it is set to run fuel from the big tank, or front tank. Put gas in the front tank.

I have a 1938 G with same set up. I don't run it very much, down and back to local tractor show once a year. I generally start it on the small tank and switch to large tank later. Reason is that I put new fuel in small tank to start it. The large tank has some older left over fuel and since our fuel these days deteriorates rapidly, I figure it will start better on fresh fuel. The older fuel burns fine once running.
