Factory vs. Dealer Built High-Crop's, Special etc

In your opinion, is there a difference in a factory assembled High-Crop tractor vs. a dealer built tractor ? For instance the 1010-HC in terms of collectability/value. 1-factory built with a handfull of dealer built. Still a High-Crop/Special no matter where it was assembled ?

I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage here. Did someone find a 1010 Hi-Crop and is there evidence that it was built by a dealer, rather than at the factory like the one that is indicated in the production records would have been?

I would say that the factory built one is always going to have more collector value because they are serial tagged as such and typically built in lower numbers. Unless absolutely no others existed. But generally speaking, a dealer built model would typically be a row-crop model, where higher numbers of those tractors were built. Anybody can take a row-crop and make it into a high-crop and that makes a lot of collectors nervous. I know several places in the south that did build their own. Not necessarily to fool anyone, but out of necessity as user tractors for customers to farm with. I owned a high-crop a year or so ago and every single person that called wanted to make damn sure it was completely authentic. So in my mind it does make a difference. I think recent auction results would support that.

Not a Hi-Crop but a similar situation is the handful of M utilities out there. These tractors were built by dealers by having the final drives turned rearward and some fabricating done to the front axle, hitch and fenders. They are unique but don't seem to be worth much more than a standard M.

I was at an auction of Polks about 10 years ago and
seen a 1010 highcrop. It was not the serial number
of the one recorded in the jd production records.
it had a tag on it but it was a standard model with
a 420 or 430 high crop front axle and larger rear
tires.
it was on a slant tilting upwards and was not in
proportions.
So yes I guess there are some 1010 HC home made out
there. dont be fooled.

Anything not original even dealer installed is not the real thing and the value although enhanced for some will be discounted by others. An Super HTA IH will sell well and JD 4320 P.S. have been made and sell well also and those are two examples there is no question as to their authenticity.I see IH 560 diesels with factory turbos and tractors with dealer installed options and recently a shuttle shift 4020 that are not the real thing. The HFWA is a hard one to tell if done correctly as the records don't exist.I have seen many tractors that aren't what they are represented as and you have to know what you are doing.
