45bn question on brakes

New to older JDs. I got a 45 BN given to me by a family member. I took the brakes off and the platform off. There are holes about a 1/4 inch big through the top of the case where the brakes go into the transmission on each side. They were plugged with mud and grease, but what are they there for? vents? oil points aren"t indicated in the service manual. Thanks in advance.
