my h has 30 over pistons. i bought it that way. had
to take head off due to leaking externally. how much
roughness is acceptable in cylinder boar? i just
want it to putt around not pulling or nothing..
piston seems tight in block. would a picture help??
thank you for your time.

Should have no roughness other than hone marks early which will wear away.
Are you talking scoring or rust pitting?
Either way if it starts and runs to suit you let it go. You might ring it while down.

to my untrained eye appears to be rust pits.. no groves or gouges. thank you for your time and help. not ran in 8 years or so.. so dont know how it runs..
regards george

Hard to say how much pitting will cause an issue.
These engines run slow and at low compression so they are VERY forgiving. They also have a lot of piston rings too which also help seal it up.
I'd check the bore wear maybe rering it and run it.

Since you haven't had it running it would probably save you time to have it bored and over hauled.
.060, .090, and .125 aluminum pistons are available.

I just went through this with a 1945 H. Only way to tell is a compression check. Maximum compression is 80 psi. Will run good at 60 as long as there is not more than 10% difference between cylinders. Anything less than 50 psi and it will be hard to start and loose power. When you loose compression you also loose fuel intake suction.. RW.
