3020 synchro range adjustment

I have an op. manual and I have an I & T manual, but neither tells how to adjust the shift on my "new to me" 3020. I know there is wear on mine, but I think it still should be able to be adjusted to operate reasonably well.
Gears 1,2,4,&6 seem to go in and stay in gear pretty well, so I haven't messed with the linkage to/for them.
I especially need 3rd gear for current chisel plowing (VERY dry/hard ground).
For gears 3,5,7&8, I've taken the "speed change/range shift rod" loose and have lengthened it by two full turns. Now, mostly, it goes into these gears and stays there. Any ideas to further improve the going into/staying in gear situation? By the way, these adjustment (to the linkage of gears 3,5, etc. don't impact the linkage of 1,2,etc., do they? Thanks for any help you can provide. kelly in tx.

If it is a high-hour tractor, look at the shifter arms on the side of the trans, where the rods connect to. Either the holes in the arms will start to wear or the rod ends themselves will start to wear down. There is a good article in the current green magazine regarding this.

Kelly unfortunately once the shifters are adjusted there really is no re-adjusting,,what I mean is if it seems to be jumping out of one gear and you adjust it to favor "that" gear,,you take it away from the other one..Primarily when they get to shifting funky, you can re-bush the shifter mechanism and if that don"t help you will need to go inside....Darn it.

You will need a center pivot 2 bushings and 4 fiber washers to start with...I weld the shift lever up and grind it to size..
