630 clutch wear and repair

Clutch Experts,
I am in need of advice on the repair of my 630 Clutch. Specifically, is worth the trouble to pull the pulley gear in order to remove the operating sleeve so that the whipped-out hole in the boss can be brazed close and re-drilled--see photos? I hope it is apparent from the first photo that the hole around the drive pin is enlarged approximately 1/4th of a hole. This lets the sleeve rotate about 7 degrees so that the toggles no longer contact the operating sleeve at a right angle (second photo).

Yes that needs fixed or else that clutch will never work right. Hard to get them to adjust like that as the tension keeps changing.

You could tear it all apart & if possible
find a new operating collar. Or tear apart
& have a machine shop install a hard insert
with the correct size hole. Or you could do
what I"ve done on Many 2 cylinders clutch"s
that have this kind of wear, is weld a thick
Washer type bushing on top of the warn part.
I"ve done 4 or 5 A models & 1/2 dozen 60"s.
+ our 630.. Does affect balance, or it"s not
noticeable. Somewhere I picked up a bunch of
1/2" washers that are hard & are 3/8 thick.
Those worked perfect.

My 2 cents

Mike and RLA, thanks for your suggestions, both good ones. I will move ahead with repairs. By the way, any tips on pulling the gear off the pulley assembly?

A big puller, something that won't put pressure on the teeth of the gear. I have a OTC hydraulic puller that came from an old Deere dealer that I think they used to pull those gears off with, I've used it and it is big enough the jaws rest below the root of the tooth. The other way is a gear splitter and an equally large puller. A little bit of heat may help.

A LARGE 3 jaw hydraulic puller. Works wonders on them.
I put them back on in a harbor freight 10 ton press. Make sure you support the inside of the pulley in the middle. DO NOT sit on the rim. I heat the gear until spit sizzles and then many times they drop on and be quick with the press in case it needs finished off. Make sure it goes on all the way too.

I for got to add John, that you don"t hafta
tear it all down to do the weld repair.

Also that pin I think goes all the was threw
the pulley & can be driven out. I"ve never
removed the pin. But if you could a shop could
weld the hole shut & machine it out possibly?
Then reinstall the drive pin.
