john deere 430S Transmission

I am thinking about buying a 430S has transmission
noise, basically what is the low to high repair
cost and extent of work required for this
transmission any help Thanks
 
You can rebuild it and it will still whine.The 420,430 tractors used straight cut gears in the tranny that are known being noisey.
 
The extent of work will be removing rockshaft, 3 point hitch, drawbar assembly, both rear wheels, final drives, & the transmission case. This can all be done w/ a mobile cherry picker engine hoist.

You will want a copy of SM2019 for input shaft, output shaft, & power shaft set-up procedures.

The majority of Dubuque transmissions I have rebuilt have had excessive end play on the input shaft at disassembly. I have seen as much as 1/8" of end play when the spec. is 0.002-0.004". A recent 40U I did had the press fit of 3rd gear on the input shaft loose by 0.050". The key & shaft was pretty bad.

As for cost expect $1000 in parts as a rough start estimate depending on how bad it is.

I get all the Timken bearings/seals from Rock Auto & has saved me more than 50% vs. dealership cost

Dont forget the shaft from the clutch to the trans.that the grooves are all wore out and the imput shaft with the splines are almost half gone and that without opening the box
 

It's mostly a matter of dissembling everything AFTER you obtain the service manual from the nice folks at 1-800-522-7448. Clean, inspect, all new bearings, new bushings and new seals. Then adjust up all clearances.

If the ring and pinion is worn. On slant steer 420's, 430's,435's and 440. The HD R&P from a 1010 gasser prior to serial # 31,000 is a bolt in upgrade.

Stiener Tractor carries a fair selection of new shafts and gears.

What is the motivation to tear into the transmission ?
