john deere A

Neighbor has jd A looks good for sitting out side the last 6 yrs. It
ran a few times long enough to move it from one fence row to
the next. Tires are not to bad. Think I in can get it for $800ish. I
dont know if it will start now or not. I want it to rake hay and
cultivate my sweet corn. How hard is it to find parts and are
they pricey? Is it a good price?

thanks

You are always taking a chance when you buy a tractor that won't start, especially if you are buying it to use and not as a restoration project. Since you know it ran in the not so distant past, I would try firing it up and run it through the gears. If it only needs a tuneup, $800 is probably a good deal. If it needs major engine or transmission work, chances are you can buy an A or B in good running condition for less than the repair bill.

Heck out the parts section of this website for parts prices.

Pretty good price for an A if it is in running condition. Check oil pressure. Should be in the "M" range and also as driving it in high range make sure it stays in gear. If it slips out could be tranny trouble.

Hope this helps

Sam

around here, that's a good price on any Green machine.
Parts are easy to find, and although they cost a little more than the Ford, Farmall used parts, it's not that bad for common stuff.
If it has useable tires, I'd probably buy it.
Another benefit of Green stuff, is if it doesn't work out for you, at that purchase price, getting your money back selling it would be easy.

800'ish with usable tires - it would already be in my driveway as you can not lose at that price.

Deere A's are easy to find parts for. They are Pretty simple to work on too. Very easy tractor to put a clutch in the field and no water pump to worry about either.

You did not say what year it was (unless I missed that part). Early A's were 4 speed tranny's. Then somewhere around 1941 to 1949 a 3 speed that incorporated a high range and a low range to attain 6 total speeds was used. Final evolution 1950-1952 used a 6 speed via single stick gated shifter that carried over to the number series was used. This tranny has a slower first gear available than all other previous versions did. The last A's offered were pretty much similar to a 60 (minus live hydraulics, live PTO option, a water pump, and the duplex carb that all became available on the 60 either standard or as options).

FWIW: My absolute favorite task for using my old 1950 John Deere A is raking hay. Low engine rpm and good selection of suitable gears (for the era) just makes this a quite pleasurable task. My farmall h and Farmall M work well for this task too but you have to run either of them wide open in 4th gear to get any speed out of them which is kind of a waste on such a light duty task like raking hay. The Deere Rollo-matic front end rides much smoother than my other similar tractors in rough fields too.
