Wondering if it is possible or advisable to change the shifter detent system used on the early 2010 jd with the ones used on the later models? am having some problems in getting speed 3 to always engage properly in spite of adjustment etc.

If you are talking about going from the pionted detents to the one with a ball and follower cup, then it's a good upgrade.

I don"t know what is in there now. The service manual I have does not show the early model detent only the ball and spring. I assumed that since they changed it so early in production the one I have must not be too hot. So I can upgrade to the new style. Any Idea where I can get the ball/retainer and spring other than salvage?

I think you can pull the plug out without draining the oil. The ones I have done were on 10 and 20 series tractors and I used detent parts out of a 4030 I think. It has been a while.

If this link works, this company bought up all the old inventory when a lot of JD dealers went out of business. You should be able to look up the parts by part number to see if it is still available,, but you must order it from a JD dealer. If you cannot get the link to work any JD dealer should be able to access it. Most wont check unless you specifically ask them to check The Part's Depot. Knowing the part numbers always helps.
