630 overhaul

Took head and block to be machined today. Crankshaft Brgs. look real good. Top rings were broken. Wonder now if a guy should look at that crank shaft seal behind the clutch? The old valves were very bad. Can see why it had 50lb compression. Thanks alot

Yep I thought it was a possibility from the ones I saw in the past.
Based on the trouble spots and the age of these machines I'd sure be looking at replacing the crankshaft seals and the seal packings that feed the oil to the main bearings.
Did you see the discussion with pictures of the seal and the reinforcement idea posted not too long ago ?

Just saw those pictures . Thank you. Now I got to get in there so they make better sense to me. I take it the pulley side is most critical but to do both sides. Thanks

You can bet the cam and followers are worn too. Loss of lift and duration makes for a rebuilt engine that can not run like new.
Not expensive to have re-ground.
It' not an overhaul unless the crank is removed, everything inspected , measured and worn parts replaced.
Distributer bushing and advance weights are rarely looked at but should replaced or cleaned/lubed.

Mike M . I see the seal on the left side in the IT. manual but I don t see mention of packing . This part confuses me right now on the 630. THANKS

Do you have a copy of the parts manual from JD ?

If not I think you can download one from jdparts.com if you have a good computer.

his would be the time to order the 60 service manual from 1-800-522-7448 . And the service bulletins from Duane Larson's estate. As previously stated the JD web site has the parts manual free online.
Now take that IT manual and use it to line the bottom of a bird cage. Those cheapo generic IT manual contains only enough info to get a person into trouble.

What they refer to as "packing" on the left side is the "seal" that you're seeing. It's a flexible ring that fits in the groove inside the oil slinger. It seals the slinger to the crankshaft. I think the part number is A4224R, but double check!! My parts book is out in the shop.

The service manual and the bulletins that the other guys mentioned are very helpful, and worth every penny that they cost.
