50 problems

I went on a tractor ride yesterday. Great time but some issues with the 1953 JD 50. I was running in 6 th gear wide open coming down hills it would get to the bottom and just stopped. Tried putting it in 5th gear won"t move but it in 3rd gear would not move. Put it in 4th and then finally got it to move. Put back in 6th and continued until the next hill. Would do the same thing. So I decided to ride my brakes and seemed to be the solution. What is the problem with this tractor? Transmission or clutch???

Sounds like the Detent Springs may be weak, letting the Trans slip into neutral..

The shifter will still be in the correct position even after this happens.

Better repair it..sometimes it is impossible to get it into any gear, when this happens (or worse).

Look at your Manual, they are accessed after you remove the Steering wheel, shift quadrant and steering shaft mount.

The shifter shaft comes out the left side.

Could also be a worn bearing or twisted shaft..

I understand that the shifter never moves. That's because hi/low is shifted as you cross over from one side to the other, so your shift lever is not contacting the hi/lo shift fork at all when it pops out. This is your problem. Deere had an updated locking shift rail setup to fix this very issue.

Ok thank you for explaining that...now i am a beginner so bare with me do I just go to john Deere and ask a locking shift rail? And does it come with install instructions?
