12v cut out relay to 12v voltage regulator 1948 D

The Delco Remy cutout relay on my 48 D shot craps and I cannot seem to find another locally so I bought a 12v saddle mount voltage regulator (BWD R197) from my auto parts store. Aside from it being big and ugly, I want to mount it on my generator where the cut out use to be. There are three terminals one one side and one underneath the VR. The three are marked B,F,L (battery, field, load) but the one underneath is not marked. Can somebody who had done this change out tell me how to wire it to the generator? It is a postive ground system as well.

The terminal underneath is GEN/ARM it wires to the Gennys ARM post.

BAT to load side of ammeter, same as BAT did on Cutout Relay........

FLD on VR wires to gennys FLD Post NOT to any Low/High light switch charge control. Do NOT wire gennys FLD to light switch, but to FLD on VR.

LOAD on VR feeds hot battery voltage to Lights and Ignition (unless a Magneto). Loads got power off the load side of the ammeter before (same ammeter terminal that wires to BAT on VR or Relay) but now LOAD terminal supplies them, often via a wire from LOAD to the switches BAT input terminal (which used to wire to ammeter)

BOTH VR and Genny need a good ground.

NOTE if it has an adjustable 3 brush genny, Id set the third brush to max charge location/position.

NOTE some VR's are labeled POS Ground, others are labeled NEG Ground, some no label at all. Best if your new VR is suitable for your POS Ground.

Id Polarize the genny prior to start up just to be safe.

No warranty that VR is well suited to your genny, although it may work fine if its suitable for your ground polarity???

Thanks John T,

I was hoping you would reply. The VR according to the manufacturer can be used as with a positive ground sytem so I am banking on that. I will polarize the generator. Should I do the same with the VR or by polarizing the genny will I not have to worry about it?
