Late B Carburetor

I have a 51 B All Fuel that I am doing an almost complete resoration on. I have found a few parts from other Deeres put on to make it work when I bought it including a 12 volt A generator which I like for a OEM look but upcoversion, a too short steerng shaft from an earlier model and maybe a carb. The tag identifies it as a Marvel DLTX108U. The book says it should be DLTX73. The only info I found here says that"s an A, G, D carb. The tractor was running before I tore it down for the restoration. Should I rebuild and put it back or try a swap it for an DLTX73 or DLTX107U?

Yes, that is the correct OEM Gas version. I found a few posts here that talk about Marvel combining all their carbs in the later years to three versions and the 108U being for the big bore tractors (A,G,D). One post mentions this carb is a "high value" part for big tractor pullers. Maybe for once in my life I will come out ahead in a sell & swap. I usually have to buy high and sell cheap. I wouldn't make a good stock broker.

That carburetor is john deere's fits all replacement carburetor for both gas and all fuel tractors with a single barrel carburetor.

If you put a larger bore A carb. on a stock late B it will have the air fuel mixture out of whack and tend to foul out the spark plugs. I bought a B with an A carb. on it one time and found this to be true. Had to put a B carb. on it and all was fine again.

I'm not posting to dispute your extensive knowlege of JD 2 cyl, Mike, but just to explain my own experience with this issue. I have a '50 "B" with a cold gas manifold and a 71 carb. The 71 does have a larger bore , slightly . I matched that bore and blended it back 3" into the manifold. This thing starts, runs , idles and pulls excellent. Only time you even see a little dark exhaust is right when you throw the throttle open and just for a few strokes which I believe is normal and desirable when throwing open the throttle. I have had no fouling or flooding. The air / fuel mixture is the same for either engine, just more of it for the A . All I can say is that mine works just fine with a 71. Just an example : a 289 ford V8 w/2bbl carb was 195 hp and with NO other changes the one with a 4bbl was 225 hp. Same cam, comp ratio and everything. Same fuel/air ratio. Within limits , you cannot force feed an internal combustion 4 stroke engine. It's only going to use what it needs. You can easily foul the plugs with a 67 if not adjusted correctly. Just my experience, not trying to start an arguement. RB
