1945 john Deere a

I'm looking at buying a 1945 john Deere a without auxiliary hydraulics or electric start. Does anyone know if either or both can be added? And if so how about a good, economical source.

First, the flywheel would have to have teeth for the starter to engage, so you would have to find a flywheel if yours has no teeth. I had an 1946 A and the starter was mounted underneath the block. I don't know about the hydraulics but I suspect you would have to change the whole housing under the seat. The hydraulic pump is transmission driven some way, never did get into that on mine. Short answer is I think it would be too much trouble and expense.

Cheaper to buy what you want to start with not something you have to modify.

To change hydraulics to be able to run a remote cylinder, change the power lift box to a power-trol box. Just a plug and play swap. To change to electric start, you'll need a different top cover (starter mount), a top-mount starter (different from the "belly" mount starters found on 47-52 A's), flywheel with ring gear, and a generator/alternator, and a place to mount the battery. To look origional/factory, that involves changing over to the "long hood" setup, but in reality the battery can be put wherever you find/make a spot for it. None of these parts are hard to find or expensive. Let me know if you need more detail than this. Mike

Thanks mike n mo. If I purchase and decide to do some upgrade I might be back in touch. I don't know if I'll need either of those additions but wanted to know the possibilities if I did.

If you get together with the seller, I may have the parts for the electric start. We parted one out, but not sure of the year. have cover, flywheel, I believe I have everything. Located in n.c. Iowa. Thanks Dave
