Automatic fuel shut on 720

I replaced an automatic fuel shut off on a 720. Photos show the in process work. There are two gas paths from the tank to carburetor. One path goes through the auto shut off. The other path goes direct from tank to carb. Both paths use rubber hose.

I don"t think this is normal from the factory although I have been told it is. It sure seems strange to me that there are two paths.

Any comments as to factory original or after market "farmer fix"? If it"s "farmer fix", what on earth could it be "fixing"?

The second hose coming off the top of the deaeration chamber to the bottom of the tank is factory. It connects to a standpipe that goes near the top of the tank to release trapped air.

I've never seen anything like that before. I think Steiners sells a kit to do away with the automatic shut offs.

These early style 720 were a fire waiting to happen ...the direct fuel line to the carb is supposed to have a shutoff no longer available from Deere Canadian Ken now Aussie Ken sold us some shutoffs and they fit and worked good....get the correct lines from Deere or someone else if the over the counter fuel line fails RUN FAST IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE

Poppen Johnny nailed the question. I"ve seen
a few set up this way, but they didn"t use
rubber supply line. I"m not sure the shut off
at the tank is correct but I"m sure it works.
This may be why they changed to rubber hose.

If you will review the parts manual you will see the line leading vertically is a vent line. Now I can"t explain exactly how this works but the parts manual says it"s a flexible line. This also a case where I would suggest you thoroughly review the parts book, looks like there are some changes or updates...does look like a corporate, engineer..rig...some people think JD is sophisticated and couldn"t even think of such a rig...but wronnnnnnnng....bad design.....probably no parts as they want to bury this ideal.....

Thanks to all you knowledgeable people for good information. I did look at JDPARTS online and agree that it looks like a bad design. I know of some bad designs too as I"m a retired electronics design guy. Designing is tougher than most think as you are usually working with time and budget limits and sometimes don"t get time to correct a bad design! Ron

I've got 2 720's. One has the same setup as the one in your pictures. The other one is more like a 730 and only has one line to the carb.

I can see where the shutoff could be placed lower...remove plug...then remove the top "whatever" put the plug there...but I don't know about plugging the tank outlet....most of the other tractors I've seen had a line that just vented the tank....one could give it a try....doesn't look like you need to buy any parts except another plug for tank....

I have 2 730-gas and they are the same as that 720 except the fuel inlet is back toward the back of the tractor and it has a 'T'shutoff no longer available from Deere on it. All steel lines also. You can shut off the fuel and take off carb and or auto shutoff with out draining the tank.Best setup of them all. Look at a 630 and they have the deaeration chamber vent on the carb also and the line runs up front of tank, but they left the automatic shut off at the back away from the carb. You have to drain the tank to rebuild the autoshutoff

I have a late model 720 with the shut off at the rear of the tank and the fuel vapor hose at the front of the tank. I need to replace the shutoff at the rear having trouble finding one.

This one has serial number 7203937 so it's relatively early and before any changes were made to the gas tank venting and auto shut off.
