Hi there recently bought a 4430 fwa as a project tractor quite rare in the uk however after sorting some wiring got the front wheels going to find the inevitable left motor blew oil out of the external relief. I started with basics checking o rings then checked leakage oil there was a lot on the left and little on the right side so figured the motor was leaking, i removed the oil manifold easy 6 pins inside hub, found the brass valve plate with a straight edge looking into light was slightly scored. Didnt seem mush but these are very precise , i figured here was my leak so i took the finest wet and dry i could find 2500 grit laid it on a piece of glass put oil on then lapped it in in a rotating motion untill i had gone past the scoring, rebuilt it making sure it was very clean now works like a champ on a moldboard plough in heavy soil, checked the leak off and both motors the same now hope this helps other people out besides if theyre worn youve got nothing to loose good luck

Thanks, Matt. Nice story, if there is one thing I like it's a good cheap fix. Will never understand those who would espouse lapping as the highest art form possible and always beyond the talents of the common man. It's a tool to be used. Used judiciously and with all the common sense one can bring to bear on the project, I have 100% success with my few attempts. Glad to see it worked out so well for you too. Nothing ventured will always be nothing gained. Thumbs up from the other side of the pond.
