Hard starting 1020

I have a 1020 diesel that has always started fine. After sitting for a month or so it now cranks slowly, like a week battery except it will keep cranking at a slow speed until it finally starts. Switched batteries, no difference, tried turning the steering wheel back and forth while starting and that really didn"t seem to help. Is there something on the hyd. pump that should kick out during starting or do I have a week starter?

Check all connections to and from the battery and clean them. Same with solenoid and starter. Check hot battery line for any cracks (possible arcing). Sitting for a month, mice could have had there way with some of the wires. The 1020's have a closed center hydraulic system, meaning that when the tractor is starting and fires up you will have full hydraulic pressure. On the main hydraulic pump in the front of the tractor some came with a shut off valve for cold weather starting and others did not. One thing you can do is push the clutch down as far as it will go while starting it. Check to see how much of a load the starter is putting on the battery when starting...it shouldnt really drop below 9 volts

1st thing to do is relocate the battery ground cable connection from the rusty battery box tho the bolt that attaches starter or to engine block. This should provide more amps to starter. To stop hyd pump power draw while attempting to start engine install a de-stroking screw(parts key #4). Only way I know to test starter is with a load tester or amp gauge to show current draw while cranking.
