for TimS, TxJim, others-PTO won't stay engaged

I have a 1980 4240 and the pto randomly disengages. My dealer rebuilt the valve body on the left side of the transmission case and that seemed fix it for a few days. It is doing the same thing again and the dealer is stumped. Quad with 10K hrs. I am currently holding pto engaged with bungy cord-will that hurt any thing? Thanks, George

Low transmission pump pressure can cause this, and that could be a 1- weak pump,2-an operating piston leak... But most of the time it's caused by the operating valve lever being bent slightly, If your Deere Mechanic knew to check this it's hard to say, but if it was here I would go back into the valve on the side and look closely at that lever,, I keep a couple on hand here, it's kinda common for them to bend, # 5B is the lever, it gets bent on the end away from the clevis pin, it is what the hydraulic detent piston works against to hold in PTO on position, if it's bent even slightly it will not stay on,,, and the rope your using is unhandy bit it won't hurt anything...

"correctly" Is the operative word here,,,a younger mechanic will not notice a slight bend in the lever,, my vote is to go back into the valve and double check..

Thanks guys. I"ll have them go in the valve and ck that lever. Pump pressure is ok since valve was rebuilt.

The pto lever doesn't hit the top of the slot in the dash, does it? A loose or busted dash will also disengage the pto by pushing the lever down.

Is it a quad-range tractor? Had a 4430 with same symptoms. Been a long time but it was an issue with the over center roller gizmo in the linkage under the dash. MIGHT have been week spring. It was a cheap fix and did it myself. Been 25 years since I owned it and that's all I remember.
