4040 update

I put the fuel additive in and ran it most of the day. It did
improve its ability to idle down some but when mowing if I ran
the rpms over 1700 it would want to run away or over rev
when going down a slight incline. If it's the governor is there
anything else I can do?

There's really not much to happen to the governor unless assembled wrong. You haven't had it apart right?
The metering valve is probably sticking. Maybe rust or gummy. Have seen them wear.

That's what I'm thinking too,, setting around and got sticky,, a little run time may clean it up..

I had a 4020 that was acting similar to that.
Sometimes you could pull the throttle down and it would take a few seconds to react.Sometimes if I turned the key off it would run for 20 seconds before it would die.I drained the fuel tank
completely and changed the filter. The last of the fuel that came out of the tank was black. After that it ran fine with instant response from the throttle and would shut off when I turned the key off.Old fuel can cause a lot of problems.

Will give it some more time. It does have a rebuilt injection pump from about 6 years ago. Deere did the work. Are these pumps something I can repair? Thanks for all the help

get some soyl oil and add to your fuel make it about 10 to 20% that will do or not if not it will take a overhaul on the pump down
