JD 420T Right Axle Locked

I recently purchased a complete 420T LP with wide front from a salvage yard with rotted rims. It has a locked right axle (if sitting on tractor). You can grab the axle and move it about 1/16" back and forth. I just bought service and parts manual for it; but was curious if anyone knows what it probably is and where to start digging. Thanks.

My cousin had an MT where water had gotten in the transmission from the shifter & rusted a bearing froze. We soaked it in Diesel fuel for 6 month & pulled it down an asphalt rd., never broke loose.

Like Tx. jim says you probably have a rusted locked up brake. Carefully slacken the big nut on the bottom of the brake so that it lets the tension off the brake. be carefull it does not twist off. you might have to give it a little bit of heat. You can also slacken the bolts that hold the brake assembly onto the tractor and then try to move it. this lets things expand a little and give off some tension.
Had to do the same thing to a 40 T that had been sitting for a while.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the "exploded" view of the brake assembly (Key 12). Apply your favorite penetrate to the plain link (Key 6), yoke type link (Key 7), and rod end (Key 8).

Also apply penetrate to the springs (Key 1), between actuating disks (Key 2), and balls (Key 3).

Take a look at the photo below of one of the brakes on "BW" our 54 Model 40T.

Once all of these parts are moving/working as designed, then your brake will work just fine.

Take a look at the photos below of one of the driven disks.

Section 150 BRAKES (WHEEL TYPE TRACTORS) of SM 2013 will be a great help to you.

Hope this helps.

I took the brake assembly off the locked side. Axle still locked. I guess it is a bad gear. Bearing on outside looks good. There was lube in there. I got the motor freed up though; so I'm kind of pumped about that.
