John Deere A will not start

When I parked the tractor last fall it ran great. Went to pull it
out this spring and have had nothing but problems. This is
what I have done. Had mag rebuilt it had a bad
condenser(mag is in time), cleaned carb thourghly with
Roberts carb drill bits, new plugs&wires. I am at the end of my
rope and need some help if anyone has any suggestions.

You stated you've done this & that to the
tractor, so we assume?

It does have spark?
It is getting air.
It does have gas & the gas is On..

So we assume the New Spark plugs wet after to
attempt to start it..
Stated the Mag is timed right, LH cylinder No. 1.
Has it even fired once? Sure does sound to me
like we need more info.
have you tried squirt of gas in the cylinders?
have you tried to pull start it?

agreed there's too little info to go on.

But take a break from it - and then a fresh, logical, methodical approach.

ALWAYS start by looking for good solid spark to both cylinders first - never assume it's there.

Whatever the answer, it'll eliminate so much.

Assuming you do have good spark, ensure it's in the right ballpark timing wise, especially since you had the mag out, and plug wires off - (don't guess here, be sure it's firing at tdc on THE COMPRESSION stroke - many forget there's an exhaust stroke!) and don't go thinking "I followed the directions therefore it must be right". See with your own eyes that it's working properly.

If that's all good - then it's down to air and gas.

Ensure you've got good fresh gas, and that it's getting to the carb.

If easy enough, take the air cleaner out of the equation, away from the carb. That'll ensure you're getting enough air (and allow for starter fluid).

Also make sure everything's tight and there aren't any rust holes or bad gaskets between the carb/manifold/engine. that'll ensure you're not getting too much air.

Try a little starter fluid sprayed into the carb. if it runs a little, you know it CAN run, and your compression is probably ok, and your timing is probably close enough. It doesn't PROVE anything other than it's close to running, but it can be a good morale boost to hear it run!

If the spray doesn't work (and maybe even if it does), check the compression of both cylinders.

If you do all that - and you still haven't figured it out - then we could offer you more specific advice.

There are just too many variables at the moment, and we'd have to write a whole book of "ifs", "thens" and "elses".

I had a similar issue with an A. I pulled the valve cover and found a stuck valve. The NEW Mag that was installed years earlier was 180 degrees out of time, do not assume that the timing is correct just because it has spark. If it has gas and air then its the timing of the mag.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I got it figured out with some help from another guy and it ended up being that my float level/fuel level wasn"t higher enough once I raised the float it took right off!
