Rebuilding lift cyl on 46A loader(2 1/4" dia) How do I remove piston? Nut is covered by outer packing retainer and assume a special tool is needed? thanks, john

There's 2 snap rings(parts keys 14 & 15) that must be removed.

Thanks for reply. Got ram out of barrel but am unsure how to get piston/packing off to reseal gland. The piston retainer nut is enclosed by the packing retainer(ref #5) which makes it impossible to get a socket on nut(ref #4). There is a 7/16" hole in retainer making me think a special spanner wrench is needed, pipe wrench would damage retainer. john

Clamped outer ram end in press, put 7/16"x1/2" bolt in side hole of packing retainer, used pipe wrench to grip bolt and thin piece of wood on other jaw to keep from damaging retainer, and unscrewed retainer and nut together. Once again I made a mountain out of a mole hill. john

Assembled piston, impossible to instal fully tightened so installed assembled ram in cyl plus head/gland, removed 1/8" pipe plug at lower cyl fitting, inserted Phillips screw driver thru pipe plug hole engaging in hole in packing retainer tightener/ram nut and tightened packing fully by using prybar in outer ram end. No applause please! lol john
