830 starter

Background: I have an 830 el start. I parked it for the winter inside a shed. It was starting fine when I parked it. When I tried to start it there was only a click. So I put in two new batteries thinking the old ones were bad. With the two new ones it only clicked. I cleaned the posts but it did not help. I noticed that the solenoid compression spring was just moving just a little. It acted as if it wanted to engage but couldn't. Is it the connections or is it the solenoid, or something more? Thanks for any help!!!!!!!

Could be a weak solenoid. The coil around the plunger may not be getting enough juice to fully magnetize & draw in the plunger. You could jump the solenoid to the S to terminal but that is extremely dangerous to do so! Remove it and bench test it instead.

Or has maybe the pinion stuck to the motor shaft solidly enough the solenoid can't pull it in far enough to rightfully turn on the juice?

Maybe you're hearing a puny click of it pulling in enough to compress the little spring that lets it bump the switch after the pinion has hit the flywheel ring gear tooth to tooth instead of being properly engaged. If the pinion has stuck fast clear out at the end of the shaft the solenoid core may not pull in far enough to hit the switch. Is maybe the click you hear a puny click instead of the solid hard clunk of the core bottoming in the solenoid and moving the pinion to the flywheel?

Make any sense?
