1970 2520 PTO how to?

I recently aquired a 2520 synchro. I put a brush hog on it yesterday. I engaged the pto too quickly at to high rpm and used 1 shear bolt in the pto shaft. My question is how slowly do i engage the pto. Is it a 3 count as i slide the lever from off to on? I dont want to burn up the clutch or put undo stress on the mower gear box.

Lower rpm and with practice you will learn where the friction point is when engaging and be able to engage it easily. It is a very short movement of the lever between engaged and disengaged. Try not to slip the clutch too much with heavy loads.

As the others have said..low rpm and slow engagement. same deal for disengaging, let the tractor idle down and the mower slow down, then release the lever and let the mower coast to a stop. Don't let the lever all the way down to the brake position until the mower has stopped spinning. Otherwise you will be replacing the pto brake, which requires the tractor to be split.

One minus on the 69/72 New Gen is the PTO is hydraulically engaged instead of like the 64/68 when you could manually engage it slowly with lever .Just idle down is your best option

If i understand correctly, with the engage being hydraulic i am shifting a valve with the lever that is engaging the pto clutch at some predetermined rate. I have engaged the mower at idel and thought i was going to stall the tactor, but it worked.

Thanks guys!

The rate isn't exactly pre-determined... if you
hold the lever at a point where it feels like it
is just starting to do something, then watch the
shaft. As it starts to turn, advance the lever
ahead slowly til fully engaged.

Don't try to use it like an on/off switch, or
you'll be back fixing the shear pin again.

Keep in mind those blades are heavy, and have a
lot of momentum- it'll make the 219 engine in a
2520 feel it getting it spinning.
