JD 420 PTO leak

Good morning,
Newbie here. I grew up farming for a guy with JD's - spent 12 years + on them - but just recently purchased my first. I bought a 1957 JD 420T, to restore and use around the house moving snow/etc.

There is oil leaking around the PTO shaft. When not engaged, it doesn't drip, but when engaged, there is a slow but steady drip. So I'm hoping that there's a seal there that wouldn't be too much trouble to fix. I'm not afraid of diving in and getting after it, but I was hoping for a bit of advice regarding what might be causing the problem and what I'd be getting into.

If there is an answer to this question already on the forum, my apologies - I did search, but came up dry....

Thanks

BA

I just did a 430 pto and it wasn't to bad. Mine unbolted with three bolts, other than the tubular cover that was held on by a nut. Once off there is a snapring to remove on the large end and then the shaft will pull out. One bearing comes off with the shaft and then the is a needle bearing inside that is between two seals. I'm wondering if your needle bearing isn't bad allowing the shaft to move more than it should and causing your leak. All the parts were available through JD. Also my housing had a plug on the side that you need to remove and fill the compartment between the two seals with gear oil or cornhead grease if your shaft is pitted towards the outer seal. This tractor has a five speed transmission, which might make a difference. chris

If it's just the seal you can replace it without taking anything apart.I usually drive a screwdriver into the old seal and pop it out. Then you can tap the new seal right in.But,if the shaft bushing is wore the new seal might leak to.

I think I saw a pto rebuild kit for these on eBay a little while
ago. Was way cheaper than what I payed at deere for new
seals and bearings. If you need it all. Just grab the shaft and
try to wiggle it, that'll tell you.
