John Deere 40 - Marvel Schebler Carburetor Overflowing?

Good Morning,
Can someone give me some advice on my 1954 John Deere 40 w/ Marvel Schebler TSX 562 carburetor? When I turn the gas on, sometimes the carburetor overflows with gasoline before I turn the starter over. I thought it might be the needle and seat so I just put a new kit in it and it still does the same thing. And sometimes it does not overflow unless I pull the choke out and if it doesn't start right up, it will overflow. It leaks a lot of gasoline out of the carburetor even after I turn the gas back off.
Thanks,

Ok D. Thanks I set both sides of the float 1/4 inch from the base of the carb to the bottom of the float front and back. I was thinking about pulling it back off and change it to 1/2 inch to allow less filling of the carb. bowl. I will check it for leaks and rubbing or binding at the same time. I think this must be and age old problem with this particular carb. because I see dents in the top on the carb where someone has been tapping on it probably to get it to stop leaking/overflowing.
Thanks JW

You didn't say if 40 is a gas or all fuel. The tsx 562 is an all-fuel carburator for the model 40. The gas carburator would be a tsx 530. This has nothing to do with your problem. It's just some people may want your carburator. Tom

Yeah Tom. My tractor is a 1954 40T with the "All Fuel" TSX 562. It has the number on the brass tag riveted on the side of the carb. It is a big heavy carb.

If the bowl venting area is clogged up they can act funny like that.
Could also be leaking where the seat screws into the carb. body bypassing the needle & seat all together ?

Thanks Mike. I am not too familiar with the bowl venting. Do you mind going into detail or tell me where I can see a diagram of the vent. I guess I could take the seat off and use some type sealer at the gasket area to ensure it's sealed and won't leak.
Thanks again,

Roberts carbs web site may have a diagram of that carb.

I was thinking more along the chance if the casting is cracked or the machined seat surface was eroded away on the carb. body.
Should be able to test by holding the needle in by finger pressure and blowing in the inlet with an air hose. Have some liquid in there and see if it comes out where it shouldn't. Wear eye
protection !

You may just find a leaky float or leaky needle ?
If your needle is not a Viton tip (rubber) some times they don't seat good when new and you need to give the metal ones a light tap to seat them.

Sounds like a good test Mike. I will try that. This tractor has been stored for a while and when I pulled the needle and seat out it looked like greenish /blueish corrosion around the seat area. I did clean the carb. good before going back with the kit. I have ordered a new float and I won't be reworking it until it comes in. Once again, I will run it though the test that you advised and hopefully get this thing resolved.

Addendum to the 'Viton' tip; if it has one (rubber dingus on the end) the deal is to tap the needle gently on the end, or rotate it gently on the seat - creating a 'seating area'. HTH

Double P.S. Same applies to a brass/bronze needle. If it has (as you say) green on it, clean with 00 steel wool first. still HTH

(quoted from post at 02:31:29 03/27/14) Thanks Bob.
Addendum: Problem solved! Bad threads for needle seat. Had to order a tap just for those threads. Re-tapped threads, installed new needle and seat and complete kit and tractor runs perfect with no leaks. Seat wasn't tightening down as it should have.
Thanks again everyone!
