long lug mag wont fit governor on Unstyled G

helping a friend with a unstyled low radiator G he bought from USA and had shipped to Australia
It came with a Wico X long lug mag installed - but there were 3 gaskets, 2 of which were twice as thick between the mag and governor, and the attaching bolts were not completely tight. when rolling the tractor over the impulse was not working on the mag. I took a brand new Wico X mag that he had and checked the lug on it as well - same lug and when I put it in place the mating surfaces would not fit either. It appears that the step on the lug bottoms out on the mag drive coupler - it looks like the coupler is on the governor shaft the correct depth - we did try a short lug mag as well, but it would not engage at all - has anyone had this problem? I think the governor had been rebuilt and the coupler should have been installed farther on to the shaft - what is the best solution? - we could grind some of the cast off of the shoulder on the long lug, otherwise the governor shaft removed and checked over--
any suggestions appreciated

Ken

Gee Ken you must have just got back and here you are fixing old stuff again. Reg G had a simmilar problem with the BR that sold at the show....not sure if he had to put more or thicker gaskets in to fix. I don"t have e-mail for him but might try to give him a call. Myself I would think that milling a bit off the drive wouldn"t hurt.As you know she won"t light if the impulse doesn"t trip.
Let us know what you find out. BTW good to see you last week!

I had an A that way and it had spun a bearing in the governor case so the shaft had moved over .

Plus the bearing itself could be shot letting the spring pressure shove the shaft towards the mag .

Yes Bob, got picked up at the airport by vintage tractor friend -who has a 1926 D and BO, and spent the night at my friend Peter's place -working on the tractors 3 hours after I arrived - he has 8 lanz bulldogs, all different models, and the John Deere's - Spoker, 1928 & 1937 D,unstyled AR, BR, GM, styled AN, and has bought MT,BO,LA,low rad G, unstyled BN & A,AOS, styled AR from Michigan in the last couple of years. The tractors from Michigan all are repainted with new tires and are probably really good mechanically, but none would start easily when he took delivery -almost all of them have carb and mag issues - the seller told Peter he wasn't a mechanic, but you would think if you are selling tractors you would get them in good starting condition before shipping, BUT he is halfway around the world so maybe the seller did not care -I should have checked the unstyled D mag connection while I was there to see how different the measurement was but ran out of time before I had to head home-will the next time I am there -I will check with Reg-
the governor shaft should be removed to check -there is a correct amount of backlash in the gears

It was great to be home for the John Deere Heritage Days and see you Bob, and everyone else in the tractor club- it was a great weekend!
