throttle no longer stays in place where do I start adjusting it is a gas keep sake my dad bought new Thanks

Looks like there's spring-loaded friction discs on the rod from the steering lever that varied with serial number.

They could be worn or the spring-loaded mechanism that keeps tension on them could have rusted solid and need freeing up.

You'll have to take a look and see what you've got.

All I can say is good luck. I've got one of the first two versions, can't remember which because it has been a couple of years since I had it apart. I replaced the disks, which is quite a bit of work and it still creeps up.
Apparently Deere knew it was a problem since they had three different designs during the eight or nine years of production.

The first version shut off with the throttle. The lever hinged up a little allowing it to be moved a little more like the Waterloo tractors.
I guess the next version was for electric shut off.
