1950 JohnDeere A and 1949 John Deere M

Me and my dad recently bought this A and M john deeres. I was going to change the oil in both the A and the M. I guess of course both have filters. My other question is for the A, Does it use all the same oil in the crankcase etc. and what type of oil would you run in the A, would it hurt to run synthetic??? and Same for the M johndeere what type of oil for it. Thanks for any tips on changing the oil and any other tips ahead of time.

The filter for the Model A from John Deere is AA 3680 R.

This same filter from FRAM is C139PL.

The filter for the Model M from John Deere is AH 1082 R.

This same filter from FRAM is C138PL.

The operators manual for the Model A recommends SAE 30W.

The operators manual for the Model M recommends SAE 20W.

We use Rotella 15W-40 Diesel oil in all of our tractors.

Good information. The original number for the A filter is (I believe) for a package of four. The number subs up (eventually) to AR26350. This filter was used in many tractors, including the 4020. Every dealer in the United States should have this filter on hand. Mike

The AR26350 filter does not come with a gasket. It needs gasket A519.
A NAPA 1242 comes with 2 gaskets. One for many of the 2-cyls including the A,B,G and one for 3010/4010s & 3020/4020s

I ordered the C139 and C138 from amazon. I don't even know if i saw a gasket. they are the frams. so maybe they do come with one??? i didn't know about the gasket. And any thoughts on running 15w40 vs. straight 30w. (thinner oil vs. the 30w)....

15W40 is not "thinner oil". It will actually behave more like a 15 weight oil when cold (i.e., during startup when you'd like it to be a bit less viscous) and will act more like a 40 weight oil once at operating temperature. A quality named brand item is also likely vastly superior in about every regard as compared to anything that could have been purchased when these machines were new.

I kinda like the idea of 15-40w rotella.. i always thought that it would be 15w when it gets warm.Im just uneducated about it.. is that the case when it warms up???

In general, multi-weight oil specified like 15w-40 means that the oil will be as viscous as 15 weight oil when cold and as viscous as 40 weight oil when hot (note that cold and hot are defined temperatures according to industry standard).

Take a look at the photo below of the gaskets that come with the C138PL and C139PL filters.
