Hey guys , what kind and type of paint should i use on my 1952 jd 60 ? Want it to look good but do not want to break the bank . Use to spray acrylic , but now the game is changed .

Just finished a 1953 "60" Used John Deere Classic Green with J.D. thinner and hardner from Tractor Supply Mixed 8 parts paint 1 part thinner and 1 part hardner. Came out nice and smooth and glossey.

I did my 420 with the JD labeled paint. It was OK, nothing magic about it and I did use hardener. I found the surface quite brittle.

I switched to a single stage enamel. Use both Dupont omni and PPG nason. The difference is night and day but you will have to anty up. I have decided that when it gets down to what people look at, it is not the time to go the economical route.

(quoted from post at 12:25:51 08/14/14) Why is everyone so obsessed with hardener ?

I would suspect that it is related to people reading the material from the folks that design and manufacture the paint. Many paints specify (for example Omni MAE Acrylic Enamel from PPG) use of it and some might suppose that the people who make it know what they're talking about. There are a slew of different types of paint (alkyd enamel, synthetic enamel, single stage urethanes, acrylic lacquer, etc. etc. etc.) and some need hardener to improve the final product (durability, speed of drying, etc).

First off JD paint is not that great! I have been painting with Montana Big Sky paint Sprays and sands nice great shine not priced to high holds up againt gas leaks and antifreeze better I get it at Agless Iron in Ohio Steve 740-502-5454 ITS WELL WORTH IT ! Here are 2 that are done in it

If you want your paint job to last and last, then don't use paint off the shelf at JD. Yes it looks good for awhile but be warned because it will fade over time as it has little to no uv protection. I think it's fine for implements or quick and dirty save some money paint jobs, but not so much for tractors. Especially when you've put a lot of time in your prep. I have found the JD paint to be runny when sprayed and take a long time to dry. Hardener does help but nothing like professional paints that can be dry to the touch in 30 min or so. Once you have sprayed a good urethane, you will never look back. On a side note, learning to clearcoat is a great skill to have and will enhance any paint job if you decide to do so. I clearcoat just about everything I paint these days.
