51 Model a Exhaust Sound

I know this is going to be a crazy question but when my tractor is idling it makes a noise I can best describe as sucking air in the exhaust stack. The tractor has not had any major engine work as it was clean, tight and ran good when I started tearing it down. It has a chrome straight pipe on it now. I have replaced the plugs, wires, rebuilt carb (professionally done) runs great, idles very slow has great power and tests 120 psi on compression with only 3 rotations. I have stopped looking for the cause but would like to hear from experts on what may be causing the sound.

What you hear is perfectly NORMAL for a 2-Cylinder 180* engine, with a Single induction Carburetor..

The left cylinder sucks an Intake charge first, leaving very little for the Right cylinder (at Idle speed)...The "Trailing Cylinder" miss-fires to some degree most of the time and the cylinder may well be sucking air back in..!!

Perfectly Normal and appropriate..

If your A has a magneto check the rotor button. The tractor is most likely firing on the dead charge cylinder and a small amount of fuel is left over that ignites. If the rotor button has two fingers it is firing both cylinders every time. Change to a single finger rotor and the dead cylinder is less likely to ignite. Of course part of what you describe is the nature of the beast.

I also think what you describe is "normal" for a 2 cyl. That's why I can't stand to have an exhaust flapper on one !!!! They get sucked shut and then just clang and bang around.

I agree, it is normal. I think the straight pipe probably magnifies the sound, my G does it also and is more noticeable with a straight on it.
