What is this for?

This device is mounted just inboard of the flywheel on my 29" D. The oil pressure indicator rod pops up on the backside and there"s an adjustment knob on top. What is this device for? I"ve read my owner"s manual and service manual from cover to cover and still am unable to identify this component. I"ve also looked at other D"s of the same vintage and haven"t seen another one. Is it an after-market add-on or factory installed? Thanks.

It looks like an oil filter housing. I've seen something that looks similar on other Ds. I'm not sure if it's aftermarket, but that makes the most sense.

It's the (factory installed) oil filter screen.

The knob is used to operate an internal setup that scrapes debris off of the screen, and it drops down to where it will be drained off when the housing drain plug is removed.

Thanks for your input, Bob. Based on the serial numbers, these oil filter screens were factory installed on 1931-1934 model D"s. It"s obviously been added to my 1929 D, SN 90785, but looks like a factory installation. I did a little more internet research and spotted another 29" D on YouTube which had one.
I haven"t got this tractor running yet and wonder how well this screen works. There"s an oil filter on the bottom of the tractor........you"d think that would be adequate enough for oil filtering. Comments?

IDK??? Growing up, my Uncle had a "D" with that setup, and I've seen one or two since.

Oh, yeah, what were the years that broke crankshafts, and the main casting of the tractor & the crankshaft and flywheel sometimes took part of the casting as they exited?

Could possibly explain why you MAY have later parts on yours, IDK?
