taperloc flywheel installation

I'm installing a taper-loc flywheel on an early 720 diesel. The instructions say to line up the timing marks on the hub and crank, then make sure the raised "tip" is lined up with it's hole in the oil seal. They say the oil seal can be rotated to line to help with placement. Well I can't rotate mine. I tapped on it some with a small hammer and punch, but I'm afraid to really smack it. When I turn the crank that seal moves with it. Is it just froze from sitting or is there ssomething I'm not doing?

jig, hope you get it figured out. I need my 730 flywheel work on, and was hoping you could tell me where to send it, and the appr. cost to get it taperlocked. Thanks Tim.

D- was right. It was just on there tight. I ended up taking off the cover behind the flywheel to check the thrust bearings. Looks like my flywheel spacer had recently gotten new packing, plus the crank splines were burred up from the bad flywheel. Filed off the burs and it pryed off fairly easily.

I got a whole new taper-loc flywheel for mine. The old flywheel was cracked. The new one has a hub you slide on the crank splines. Then you put the new flywheel on the hub and tighten down a big nut until TIGHT. It came with instructions. I see them advertised at several parts suppliers. Found one within driving distance of me for $900. It seems there are no good used cranks and flywheels left to salvage. And at least this way you have a new, tight end result that you'll never have to worry about. I think you used to be able to have the taper-loc hub put in your flywheel, but I never hear anything about that anymore. Don't know if that is an option anymore or not. If so ,I bet it would cost close to the price of the whole new unit.

Allen Machine Works builds those flywheels, and they do a good job.

For some models, the only option is to re-do the old one, but they have new for 70-730 diesels, as well as a few other models.

The trouble with having yours redone is the cost of freight- you are paying to ship it both ways.

They made me one for an A this spring- he sourced a used one near him, installed the taper lock and shipped it to me. Turn-around time was fast.

There is a much cheaper way.
Search Belzonia. I have repaired many this way.
