a $$$ Shocker....

I recently was given a $100 gift certificate to
the local JD dealer by a club. A knowledgeable
gentleman helped me diagnose my hard starting '41B
to a less than robust mag; he recommended using JD
parts and not aftermarket points, condensor, rotor
and cap gasket. I fully expected that the JD parts
would be more $$, maybe half again as expensive as
the knockoffs.
I ordered the parts and went in to pick them up
this morning and the parts guy asked me how I
wanted to pay the difference...
I said wha??? what difference, the gift
certificate is for $100.
The total came to $188 !!!!!
$60 rotor, $49 points, $57 Cond, $8 gasket.
Needless to say, the only JD part I bought was the
gasket, and instead asked for the AI generics.
I will pay a premium for quality parts, but this
is insane.
The AI generics cost $44 and change. Am I completely out of line or is this
lunacy?

You're not out of line. My business involves spares for older "legacy" equipment. The thought the manufacturers have is " if they want to hang in their with older, obsolete stuff, we'll milk it". If you can get around it, you should.

I see this every day,, what we are doing is paying for the luxury's the Mega stores have,, and all the new trucks and black top around the gigantic stores,, it's getting "way" out of hand...

I was in need of a rotor so I called my local JD dealer and they wanted around 50 bucks and they had to order it . I went ahead and got one from Stieners for under 25 bucks. This was a couple years ago and I know JD has went up on them. My aftermarket rotor is still running like it should with no problems .

I've bought the same parts from our hosts at YT for a LOT less money and they seem to work fine. Tractor lives in a heated shop and only gets run once a month, but, still, NO problems. HTH

I just recv'd a note from a knowledgeable friend who informed me that JD owns AI; and chances are, some, if not many parts labeled JD are in fact the same AI parts we pay less for. If true, that's not right.
I have mixed emotions about encouraging folks NOT to buy JD parts because I have a cubic buttload of JD stock. :)

Still stocking parts for a 73 year old tractor! What other companies do that? Not that I pay the high prices they want either but still to have them available today.

"LEGACY" doesn't always explain it... case in point CHEAP plastic in-line fuel check valve for a less-than-10-y-o tractor... metric equivalent of 5/16"... just change under $40.00.

I firmly believe in buying from the dealer, EXCEPT at insane prices. I thnk we have ot keep the dealers in business, otherwise where would we be? But not insane prices.

Your are correct in a way,, but the dealers are taking advantage of us in a very greedy manor...they make us beg for service, allow us little to nothing on our trades and have the price of new equipment out of sight..

Well JD is just trying to keep YOU the stockholder happy !

I remember years ago they were announcing record profits for the year and at the same time sent a letter around to dealers the parts prices were all going up an average of 10% !!!! WTF

I just rebuilt the governor on my 720 diesel. Weights were 138.... EACH!! and the pins for the weights were 33.... EACH!!

John Deere has a plan on the older tractors. Price restoration and repairs out of site and get rid of them. I'm surprised the post hasn't figured this out in the past 3-4 years. They don't want the older stuff operating and this is their way for planned extinction.

ust be only the parts that ARE still in stock.(old stock)
A lot of parts are already discontinued for JD tractors and equipment from the seventies.
Same as with all other brands.

Yep, I generally comb the web.. ebay, google, searches etc.. to find parts before i head to the dealers..usually get lucky but there are times when I have to.. and I agree with the statement of supporting them but...Im not stupid either..
