I had some bad luck today.just completely rebuilt 1964 4020 diesel I filled it up with water to crank it and noticed water coming out of 4 weep holes.i check oil no water in it,so I cranked tractor and ran about 1 minute before shutting it down.still no water in oil.what do you all think ever seen this, thanks

Strong chance you didn't get the grooves clean enough, letting the new o-rings protrude a bit and sheared them when the liner went in,,Darn it...

I figured it must be something like that , I wire wheel cleaned them out .they were all clean.i thought anyway.just checking to make sure it wasn't something else , since I have so many cylinders doin it.

It is hard to get a wire wheel to get into the bottom of the o-ring groove. When I overhaul a wet sleeve engine, I spend a considerable amount of time with a right angle pick and a good mirror to make sure I get everything out of those grooves.

Hi
When I do the wet sleeve liners I clean the groove until i figure its clean then clean it 3 more times to make sure. Those blocks can be like the Fordson Major ones prone to rot the seal grooves out. some go a little some go a lot, how bad did that one look. maybe that caused the ring to do funny things putting the sleeve in?. I know the wrecking yard I worked in had 1 good block left that wasn't rotted out, when I quit there so pretty common, if cooling system not looked after properly by previous owners.
regards Robert

The condition of the grooves must be examined - perhaps with a mirror. As others haver said Majors suffer with this problem. With a good block we used to hand cream on the sealing rings to minimise damage during assembly. I recall a couple of blocks that were badly corroded in the grooves where the rings sit. We salvaged those by using copious amounts of silicone rubber which in combination with the sealing ring formed a good seal and provided lubrication during assembly. One of these blocks performed well for 30 years in my ownership so I know it worked. I wonder what causes this selective corrosion in the seal area. Fergusons have wet liners but I never saw a problem there. The liner is sealed by a gasket. I suspect that the corrosion problem is caused by some sort of electrolytic circuit made worse by rubber sealing rings at the base of the liner.
