batteries puked in the 4430 open station

They were about due. Last replaced in fall 2008.

Instead of buying 2 more 6 volt batteries, I just installed one 12 volt in the LH box and left the RH box empty. I pulled the ground from the RH box, and installed it in the LH box. I have the gear reduction starter. It seems to crank just as well on 1 12 volt as it did on 2 6 volts...

Am I gonna regret this?

If not, I'm gonna tack a piece of expanded steel on the backside of the RH box and have another place to store tools and parts.

I have a friend who did this with a 4840. He overhauled it and had the head redone so it has good compression and doesn't take much to start. However I don't think he starts it very often in the winter. That will likely be the test.

I have two 4430's with one 12 volt battery each. Both are good cold starters so that's how I get away with it. If it's really cold out I'll jump them if I really need one going.

Thanks fellas. I will mount a second 12 volt and run the cables parallel if I'm not happy with the performance, but I think I'm gonna like it this way.

I'm gonna do it to my 2040 as well. The battery cable corroded away to nothing in less than 2 years. I've never had so much trouble with cables as I had with that thing. I don't think I've EVER had a cable rot so fast - and it was a double odd made right at the John Deere Dealership... I kinda wonder if doubled up batteries exacerbate corroding cables.
