4020 remotes

A friend has a 68 4020 that keeps blowing the
remote valves. 2 local Deere dealers have looked
at the tractor and can't find what is causing it.
The first 2 times they were using one a way
cylinder, once the valve they were using cracked
the other time the end cap on the other valve
cracked. I hauled it to a Deere dealer for them,
they replaced the broken valve and run their
tests. Said was ready to go. They brought it home
and ran the hydualic moter on their bale wrapper
for less than 30 minutes and another valve blew.
Any idea what is wrong here?

Check the mounting plate/rockshaft valve cover behind the rh scv. If it is about 1 1/2 inches thick, remove it and inspect the passages to make sure there is some type of oil passage for each packing. The 4020's did not have this directional control valve plate originally but some have been added to help with using one way cylinders. When adding this cover you need to drill a hole in the rockshaft valve housing for return oil when using a one way cylinder or the scv housing will split due to no outlet for return oil. The original plate was about 1 inch thick. Let us know what you find.

Jim, you're right on that. Looks like I shouldn't post late at night lol. Not sure what the problem could be on an early model. Haven't seen that.

The early model remotes are a bit different in design, and harder to repair than the newer ones, , but it seems like there is back pressure building up some how, the inner housing will not deal with full pressure...

Fellows, I'm not sure what all the dealer checked, but they are usually pretty thorough. The nieghbor has since took the valves along with another to replace the busted one to another Deere dealer they checked out fine. Is there a check valve or relief valve somewhere that could be stuck that would cause this?

On the valves in front of the dash the return oil goes to a t on the steering valve on down to the transmission oil filter relief valve. I wonder if this valve might be stuck open. Not sure if this would cause your problem but return oil is definitely what is causing this . The cavity on those valves wont take system pressure . This could also blow the bottom plate off the steering valve as well .

The valve was not stuck but the spring was broken allowing it to drop down abount a quarter inch. It would seem though that that would not cause it to gain pressure unless I'm thinking wrong.
