John deere 3020 D stalls out

Hello, I really hope someone can answer this for me. If my brush hog jumped the pto hook up and pushed the tractor pto shaft forward could that have messed up the pto and engine clutches and cause the tractor to start but stall out after about 10 seconds?

I can"t see anything that would cause that if it is a synchro range, and probably nothing if it is a PS.

Sounds like a ailing injection pump governor damper ring.

LOTS of threads in the archives on THAT subject.

I"m with Bob,, try to explain it a bit better,,did your PTO shaft actually drive forward and stay?? This is near impossible on that tractor,,,with the PTO off, like in "UNhooked" it still will stall the engine??

no the pto shaft doesn't stay forward with the brush hog unhooked, you can still move it forward and back a little bit. I thought it was the injection pump also but the tractor will start and run for a few seconds but it dies out. this all happened the same time I was mowing and noticed the brush hogs pto shaft slipped forward on the tractor and pushed it up. I just got the tractor and have been running it for about 20hrs when this happened. I changed the lift pump and filters. all the lines are bled. the air intake isn't plugged at all. Im just new to john deere. the rest of my family likes case

I'm sorry for the rest of the family,,, but it does sound like the injector pump return fitting is clogging up, we have talked about this a lot in the past, but your new so here's what you need to do: follow the line that goes across all the injectors and down to the pump, this is the return line remove the line, then remove the fitting out of the pump, restart it and see what happens it will slobber w little fuel but let it happen the engine should run normal now,, look at the fitting that you removed from the pump, it has a washer, spring and check valve in it, file the fitting some and remove the check valve stuff, blow the fitting clean, put it back together with out the check valve,, what is happening is the coupler in the pump is deteriorating and the little chunks are plugging the return, causing the engine to idle down and stop, it will be okay for a while but it will need rebuilt in the future..

Ditto what Tim stated. Simple test: loosen the 2 timing window screws, pry rubber gasket loose, crank engine and check to see if it runs longer period of time than before.
