630 ENGINE COMPRESSION

My 630 will hardly start. It backfires and puffs smoke and may run the battery down before it starts. The compression is 50 or less. Is this what is causing my trouble? Thanks. Runs fair after started.

It should start quicker then that even with your compression and a electric starter. Try adjusting valves and lightly file the points and make shure the contacts under the cap are clean, copper plug wire ends are clean with good plugs and fresh gas. Maybe even reset the points too. Compression test should have been done with the throttle at wide open. Squirt some engine oil in each cylinder and retest the compression. If it raises your in need of a overhaul. If it don't, usually that's valves not seating. I'd do a leak down test also. Roll piston(s) to top of cylinder and put air pressure to them. Listen where the air is going. Out the exhaust ? Then its valves. Inside the crankcase ? Then its rings. I made a tester using a old spark plug and some 1/4" pipe. I used around 50lbs air pressure. UNHOOK YOUR COIL WIRE FIRST !!!

My experience with these tractors is they were heavily used and abused. On tear down I've always found the top ring broken and land badly deformed on the cast alloy pistons. You could also have a valve problem. Costly fix....

The GOOD News is that they are pretty easy to tear down..!
At 50#, it sure won't pull much, compared to a good Tight engine..
I had an "All-Fuel" JD 60 that was good but with the original Low-Compression Pistons and it would not pull 3-14" unless it was in 1st (Creeper)..
And even it had more compression than you have...

Thanks to everyone. I appreciate it. I knew I was in some trouble. Broke the starter gear this morning and discovered some one welded the nose of the starter back on sometime. Thanks again.

Those only break when they're either too far from the ring gear or occasionally the flywheel moves too far out. Check both of these
