welding a manifold

36 A

The manifold on my sons 39 B has a small crack on the top . It was not leaking yet but its off for an overhaul . I was thinking of drilling the ends of the cracks and using our victor powder torch . I have never welded one of these anybody done one ? Thanks Mark

Might be really thin there ? as it could be the heat passage to keep the manifold warm for all fuel.

I have welded other exhaust manifolds in the past with nickel rod and an AC welder and they welded up nice.

Cast iron manifolds can be hard to weld because the carbon is burned out of the metal as it heats and cools and they are usually thin. Sometimes it works quit well and other times we won't talk about.

I have a 36 A with a cracked manifold on top also. I decided to leave it alone as it wasn't leaking..

I use a spray torch with cast iron powder. It works very well. I can even put a missing ear back on. Very machineable. Email if you have a problem.

The round part that the pipe bolts to was broke on mine. I called a welding shop and the guy said that he has welded and brazed alot of manifolds off of well moters he said some times they will hold and alot of times the will crack because of the heating up and cool down cycles. I just bought a diffrent manifold off ebay and didnt want to take a chance of it breaking again plus he charges 80 dollars a hour .
