Got a 2030 in shop w/pin hole in #4 sleeve, belongs to hobby farmers. Should I recommend in frame OH or rings and sleeve on #4?

I would recommend rings and sleeves in all cylinders, the labor cost when it's tore down and gaskets will be about the same(a little more for labor) but all in all I think he will be farther ahead to do it while it's tore down.

You can't guaranty that a different sleeve won't have the same problem next week.

I'd list the cost of fixing one cylinder (with no guaranty) and the cost of an overhaul. Let the owner decide how much he will pay you. He might want to fix it, or he might only want to fix just enough to sell it.

I'd explain to him what the alternatives are and the costs. Tell him it can be cheap (fix one hole) and back next week for more of same and you'll only warranty the ONE you fixed OR he can spend some more money and you'll do all cylinders and it should be good for a while and explain how long you think that'll buy him and how you're willing to stand behind it OR for even more money you'll do a complete rebuild that'll last for thousands of hours with proper care. Let them choose the level of service (and cost) they want or can afford. In the pitch tell 'em what you think is right.

All four sleeves and pistons. use the high compression set.Tell the owner if he had kept the corrosion inhibitor up to spec in the coolant. There would not have been cavitation holes.
Check to make certain the block isn't corroded.
There are balancer shaft bushings that an inframe will not access.

Hi as others have said do all 4 cylinders,
1 they could all be the same or heading for seal ring failures.
2 if you renew 1 bore set the compression could be way higher on one cylinder, and in time that could break the crank on that cylinder due to uneven stresses.
In my shop i get the customer to sign for any half assed work "THEY" want done, and that everything has been explained to them and they are on their own if it blows up after.
I got a few guys I won"t even do the jobs like that for, as the coffee shop story would not be good for my business, those guys wouldn"t know the truth if it climbed their pant leg and bit them. So i figure it"s better not to do the jobs in those cases. Somebody else can deal with the problems.
Regards Robert

Thanks for all reply's. Guess I knew the right answer, but after 40 yrs of pullin wrenches seems I get overwhelmed with decisions aka making mountains out of mole hills. Anyone interested in an established AG repair shop? email is open, regards, john

P.S. Quoted them $4500 out the door for an inframe. Horse people, so I might have a 2030 in yt classifieds in Oct. lol
