730D dies under load

How many HP does it make on the dyno? How do you know it"s partly running on one cylinder ? What is the right and left exhaust gas temperatures? What is the tractor"s history ?

I do not have access to a dyno or suitable apparatus for measuring exhaust temp. As far as history goes I have run this tractor for 25 years and never had the rocker cover off. Yesterday I noted a stepwise drop in power that reminded me of a time when I ran the tractor with the fuel shut off at the tank. I would be grateful for any thoughts on what the problem could be.

I would check your primary fuel pressure coming out of the transfer pump. They are supposed to be 18 to 26 lbs. I had one years ago that I was cultivating with and while pulling up a hill, it started doing what your describing. it would idle good.. and pull at low rpm fine... but miss at high throttle. After testing compression, both injectors, and both injector pumps and finding nothing wrong.... We tested the primary fuel pressure and found we only had about 2 lbs. The transfer pump was ok, but when we took apart the return check valve, there was a honey bee stuck in it!!! We cleaned it out and it ran fine. Since then, I have learned to check primary fuel pressure on any diesel first if I am having problems. Good luck and keep us posted!

I 2nd the notion of checking fuel pressure. We take a priming plug out of one of the fuel filters and screw a gauge in there. It'll run with no pressure but starve for fuel when a load hits it.

The late model tractors with the bleed valve need at least 50 lbs of supply pressure. More is even better. The pressure numbers in the service manual only apply to the early 720 tractors that did not have the anti-reversing camshaft. The pressure numbers for the late tractors were published in a service bulletin. The amount of time for injection to occur on the late model tractors is so much shorter with the anti-reversal camshaft that it requires a higher feed pressure from that little supply pump for things to work properly.
