So this is a culmination of a year and a half working on this project in my spare time. I didn't count my hours, but it was a lot; I know that. When I set out to do this, I decided I didn't want hack job and I didn't want to cut a bunch of corners either. I think it came out pretty nice. I don't have the air done yet, but it's coming. I have all the components mounted, just have to run the lines. Couldn't wait to pull it out and snap a few. Anyway, let me know what you think, I welcome your comments.

WOW!!! That is a fine looking 6030. I discovered the 6030 within the last year and a half. It jumped to the top of my list as my favorite tractor after I learned more about them. I have only seen one in person and it was a pulling tractor. I have a buddy that is the same age as me, 37 that grew up on a farm in MN and he had never heard of or seen one until I was telling him about them. The sound guard cab is my favorite cab when it comes to JD's.

I'm jealous! Sure is nice looking.I have seen your project journal but it wouldn't let me leave a comment, you have put a bunch of time into it and the results are amazing, very nice tractor. John

Strange, I was wondering why there were no comments in the journal. I do have it set to allow them. Must be a site issue.

Very Nice Job. I didn't realize the SGB would sit that much higher above the hood on the 6030 than the Gen ll's. Did you install a Quad-range trans in the 6030??

WOW! What a beautiful horse. Looks like she's more than ready for the show room floor.

No it has the factory syncro. Cab sits higher in order to clear the rockshaft housing and arms. It's very close. In fact we had to modify the cab in order to get it to where it is. If it was a wheatland tractor, it would be easy to slam the cab down lower and use smaller tires.

I have been watching your progress on this tractor since I first saw the photos posted late last year. I have been anxiously awaiting for the finished product. What an awesome undertaking! Congratulations on a very fine piece of work. The 6030 appeals to me. We have one on our farm in its "working clothes" and there is nothing quite like one of these. You have taken this tractor on to a completely different level! Thank you for sharing your progress with the rest of us.

The only thing lacking on the 6030 was a nice cab .Tim S. replied to seeing some at JD factory during production years.Odd that they produced 6030s until 1977 with Hinsen cabs and the sound quard cab was available in 73.They were a beast but a 4840 was about the same just different engine and trans about same H.P. Your tractors look very well done. The restored look is nice but I still think the best finds are the low houred originals and they will outsell a completely repainted show room quality paint job in our area.I can see by your 4020 and 6030 you have spent many hours doing it right.Too many tractors are not done right which is a waste of time.Open station 6030s still sell well if nice.

I do have two questions one the rear scvs and the other with the quad range console. How does it shift and are the boxes mounted differently might just be picture. Thanks great workmanship.

Not sure if I follow your question. The valves are mounted normally. The shifting is all done with linkages. Thought about using cables but decided to go this route instead. There's a lot of engineering under there. Was much harder using the quad shifter than if I had went with the syncro shifter because the throw from gear to gear does not match up between the two. So I had to take that into account. I did a computer cad layout in order to get the ratios correct.

Thanks, that means a lot. I've enjoyed all the comments here so far. I wish the site would allow comments in the journal section. I bet when you started watching from the beginning that you didn't expect this. But when I get a vision in my head, I can see finished product. So this is what I had in mind all along. Just took awhile to get there.

Very nicely done. I can tell you put a lot of thought into it. I'll bet
you are like "whew can't believe it did it" Well done.

Yes, and also "do I really want to use this in the field now?" Because that was my original intention.

I'm not familiar with the "new generation Soundgard cab". Would that have been an upgrade kit to fit a Soundgard cab on 2510 thru 4320 tractors?

In the mid 1970's Deere was selling every rowcrop tractor they could make and they were backloged. Many low hour late model tractors of all brands were being traded for new Deere, Case and AC tractors with the new cabs. I think a Soundgard cab added about $4000 to $5000 to the cost of a new $8000 to $12,000 tractor. I don't think any other tractor companies offered new cab upgrades for their older tractors either.

Did Deere build their Soundgard cabs, or did they subcontract that to another company?

I'll speculate as that either:
A - The price to upgrade a tractor would have been very close to the same price as trading for a new tractor, but less profitable.

B - Many farmers were expanding and needed to trading for larger size tractors as well as the new cab.

or C - Marketing departments projected that upgrade cab kits could hurt new tractor sales, especially in an economic downturn. They wanted to sell new tractors and combines, not cab kits, especially if they were farming out their cab production to other companies.

I know hind sights is 20/20 but I really quesiton some of Deere's decision making over the years. For instance, why did they bring out the 4520 before the 4320? "Hey, let's create a whole new tractor that is so big that it scares the hell out of everyone and limits our sales. But in a couple more years, we'll do something easy and basically put a turbo on a 4020"? Why not do that first. Build the 4320 first and give the 200,000 guys who alread own 4020s a taste of a bit more power. And then say hey if you need even more, we now have the 4520.

Sure would be nice to be a fly on the wall at some of the deere exec. meetings to know why they did or didn't do certain things. I think a tractor from the factory similar to mine would have sold well. But maybe that's what they were afraid of. Perhaps they thought it would cut into sales of 4630s. The soundguard cab came out in 73 and the 6030 in 72. It would have made more sense to marry them and continue in that fashion than to keep using outdated henson cabs for another 5 years. I'm sure that easily turned a lot of buyers off if the two were parked side by side on the lot.

I would have liked to have been in the room with a machine gun when they designed the Dubuque tractors..

Have a 4230 price sheet right here.
Base price is $10,307. Add $1355 for a SGB, $545 for air and $85 for heater.

WOW!!! fantastic job! Great to see someone take a dream/vision in their head and turn it into real life. It'd be fun to see it at a show or a TV program like Machinery Pete or Max Armstrong do a feature on it.

Yeah that would be cool. Article in Green Mag. or something. Not sure how to make that happen though.
