720 generator

I have a 720 that started that when I shut the tractor off the generator wheel keeps running against the fan belt. Any ideas of what would be causing this to happen? Seems that when pressure is applied to the belt the wheel stops turning and generator "clicks". Could this just be the belt is to lose or would the generator be somehow running as a motor and pulling power from the batteries? Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the Cutout Relay inside the Voltage Regulator is sticking closed (contacts burned and carboned). Its supposed to open when you shut the tractor down or else the genny tries to run as the DC motor it is, and the battery will soon discharge. If you remove the wire on the VR's GEN/ARM post or at ARM on the genny, it should stop. Sometimes if you clean/file/polish the cutout relay contact points it will help, but once all the shiny silvery coating is gone they can stick again. May need a new VR

The belt and pulley is worn along with loose tension. A generator should not be able to spin the pulley against the belt if the cutout is stuck closed.
Don't try super tightening the belt either. You will be in the market for a new generator bushing.

John; sometime could you explain in fine detail how a cut-out works? I know how, but it would take too long with my 1 finger typing.

Thanks for the help guys. Looked at the regulator today when I had it out and the point does have a small burnt spot on it and they are sticking closed. Going to try to file them a little see if it helps if not I will have to pick up another one. Im not one for electrical stuff so thanks for the help.
