JD rope knob

Well, I'm not sure HOW it was used, but I can tell you WHERE it was used. It is found on the following moldboard plows: 4B, 44, 51, 52, 55, 55 Spec, 56, 66, and F610-630. This is according to the Master Parts Index.

you raised and lowered your breaking plow by pulling a rope, this was on the end of the rope to hold on to This was before cylenders were used and were called trip plows . You could hold the rope untill a cog turned and caught on wheel which would raise plow. You then jerked rope and it would drop.

Well, one thing about trip ropes, you want a quick disconnect on the seat, because when the plow hitch trips and the plow stops the rope had better disconnect from the tractor , otherwise you will damage the plow handle and tractor seat

I've got a NOS one of those, it was positioned on the rope where it was easily reached and it was like tying a knot in the rope, as you reached back you knew you had the rope in the right spot. (Without this) If you ever reached back and grabbed too far forward on the rope, and your arm didn't move far enough to trip the clutch, you had to stop and back up or have a ragged headland.

We always used a "feed sack string" which was saved from a sack of ground feed from the local mill. It was much weaker than the trip rope, so it broke first, AND IT WAS FREE. Just a memory from the 50's.

(quoted from post at 09:59:31 07/23/14) Anyone know how the JD rope knob (D 960 A) was used?
My parts book shows this knob on a rope on the leveling lever. The hitch is the cushion spring release. The knob I think was used to take the slack out of the rope when the lever was lowered. You could lift up on the rope which released the trigger and pull away from the plow and stay on the tractor. Possibly hook up the plow by lifting up on the rope.
